TO THE HELPER

The presentation of this concept is not intended to do anything but educate. This is simply offered as a potential assist to you and those suffering the effects of problem drug use.  We take a light-hearted approach to a very serious situation.   We know full well that lives are at stake.  We believe that the time has come for a radically divergent force to influence our consciousness on this issue.  We hope and work for nothing less than a complete awareness of SLUGS in the popular culture in order to bring these values to the people.  We just want everyone to know the meaning of life without drugs.

Try SLUGS and see if it fits for you.  Have some fun with it.  Use sayings like “SLUGS not drugs”.  Affirm “I’m a Slugger, not a drugger,” and encourage such activities with those whom you wish to help.  Find cues or reminders of SLUGS in your surroundings.  Listen for sound-a-like words for the same purpose.  A mind focused on SLUGS is focused away from drugs.  Try it on and then pass it on.

Think about whether there exists another word with so many meanings, or so much meaning.  Decide for yourself whether or not this concept captures the full essence of recovery and therefore merits your acceptance and utilization.

It has often been said that in order for addicts to recover, it is necessary that they adhere to an exotic belief system.  SLUGS  fits that need quite well, we think.

You may ask where this idea came from.  We like to respond that it is from SlugSource.  Giving credit to a Higher Power helps in avoiding the ego trap.  We are primarily interested in spreading the word, not getting personal credit.  We present this to you in the spirit of humility and with a sincere wish of SlugSuccess.

SlugSystem of Recovery

As applied in a treatment setting:

  1. Get them sober and help them stay that way long enough for the other factors to begin working.
  2. Give them all the love you can muster.
  3. Provide every opportunity for group support and unity.
  4. Set up every growth enhancing activity you can.
  5. Let them in on the spiritual stuff.

Keep repeating as necessary.

- Sobriety - - Spirituality - - Unity - - Love - - Growth -
